At long last we have gates!!!! Well almost, they are still under construction and the second phase of the reserve is being fenced to give the current reserve a total of 18500 ha. The 5 gates are pretty impressive and really do give a proper Game Reserve feel to the entrance. At the same time during the building process of the gates there have been some very hilarious moments.
At the moment the main gate on the Rust de Winter road looks very silly when you approach it from the Hammanskraal side the huge impressive concrete entrances are vertically straight but the road has a very serious camber and so it gives the appearance that the wall is crooked and one wonders with all of the brains behind the gates; architects, engineers, draughts people and many more, how did it get to the completion stage before someone realised there was a problem and then of more interest how are they going to fix it?
Hopefully they will change the angle of the wall because as sure as nuts a good few left hand side mirrors are going to decorate the wall. The alternative will be to straighten the road but this will be enormously expensive. All engineers etc please note there is no charge for these hints because they seem to be stymied for answers at the moment, the contractors have put in a great big grid in the road and it goes no further. Maybe there is a lot of head scratching going on or someone just said EISH ???? In the meantime the grid is also serving a public purpose as we have a number of gentlemen no doubt aided by generous quantities of SA Breweries favourite tipple who do no see the enormous signs in front of the newly installed grid, travel at high speed over the grid and leave four tyres and sections of engine, gearbox and differentials behind to decorate our roads.
